The present paper provides a Webdistinguish five phases of word learning. Each phase is characterized by learn-ers’ understanding and use of the alphabetic system in their word reading. The five phases are (1) the pre-alphabetic phase, (2) the partial-alphabetic phase, (3) the full-alphabetic phase, (4) the consolidated-alphabetic phase, and (5) the automatic-alphabetic phase.
